Busan Techno Park announced that it will cohost a seminar alongside COENS Co., Ltd. on Floating Wind Power Korea 2018 at the ENTECH 2018 international environment & energy exhibition, 

scheduled to be held at Busan’s BEXCO convention center from September 5 to 7. The seminar is sponsored by Busan Metropolitan City and the Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd.

Offshore power generation using floating wind turbines is drawing attention for its yet-untapped potential as a source of renewable energy. The seminar will explore how shipbuilding and marine 

engineering, two core industries in the Busan region, might benefit from increased development and investment in this area. 

A number of representatives from major engineering, investment, renewable energy, technology and service firms in the floating turbine platform industry are scheduled to give presentations on the 

state of the business. These companies include Hexicon AB, ATKINS, Van Oord, ABS Group, Northland Power, Pareto Securities and COENS Safety. Korean Wind Energy Industry Association

In 2017, the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced a plan in which 20 percent of all energy produced nationally will come from renewable sources by the year 2030. In light of this 

project, which the government has dubbed the “3020” policy, six months ago Busan Techno Park signed a memorandum of understanding with Swedish engineering firm Hexicon AB, which 

specializes in floating wind energy platforms. The two organizations are now cooperating in efforts to develop the coastal wind turbine industry in the seas around Busan.

Mr. Yeong-seok Kim, the head of Busan Techno Park’s High-tech Components Materials Research Support Center, described “It is possible to lower costs and reduce construction time for offshore 

floating platforms by assembling the substructure and superstructure at existing fabrication yards, then transporting the assemblage to its ultimate offshore destination for final installation.” “Hexicon’s 

multi-turbine platform, which we will be pleased to promote at the seminar, has a significant economic advantage over existing single-turbine fixed platforms in it more efficiently utilizes surface area 

by allowing a greater number of turbines to be installed in a comparatively smaller space.”

He also is hopeful that the construction of such platforms might help kick-start the revitalization of slumping industries in the greater Busan area.

 “This is a golden opportunity to develop the southeastern region - which is in already possession of deep-water ports and top-notch logistics and shipbuilding infrastructure - into a major player in 

power generation,” he added. “And in doing so breathe new life into firms hit hard by the recession in shipbuilding and marine engineering.”

The ENTECH exhibition, which is marking its 12th anniversary this year, will host the representatives of over 300 companies from 11 countries, who will conduct promotional activities in more than 

850 booths. Firms in attendance represent diverse interests in the environment, energy and future climate industries.
