Busan Techno Park successfully held a seminar (Floating Wind Power Korea 2018) promoting some of the most exciting new technologies in floating wind power generation at the ENTECH expo, 

convened at Bexco in Busan from September 5 to September 7. 

Sponsored by the government of Busan Metropolitan City and Korea Southern Power, co-hosts Busan Techno Park and COENS invited representatives from major players in the floating wind power 

industry to introduce attendees to the prevailing trends and cutting-edge technologies in the business. Their presentations described some of the new technologies already being implemented in wind 

farm projects overseas, highlighting the cost reductions increases in efficiency enabled by recent advances in wind power generation. 

The Floating Wind Power Korea 2018 exhibit featured a panel discussion, where Korean Wind Power Association Advisory Chair Mr. Choong-ryeol Son, alongside investors and developers in the 

renewable sector, appealed to both government and private industry to intensify efforts pressing for the expansion of wind farm installations. 

In addition to conducting the seminar, Busan Techno Park and COENS’ promotional booth played host to one-on-one business consultations between overseas buyers and domestic firms, helping to 

strengthen ties and identify opportunities for cooperation in future projects.

Mr. Henrik Baltscheffsky, CEO of Hexicon AB, delivered an impassioned speech at the keynote address, focusing on Korea’s growth in the floating wind power industry. 

“Government and industry are actively encouraging investment in floating wind platforms in Korea, which has some of the best naval construction infrastructure in the world,” he said. 

Mr. Andy Thompson, who manages engineering outfit Atkins’ entire offshore wind portfolio, was similarly hopeful about Korea’s future prospects in industry in his remarks. 

 “Owing to our experience in engineering floating oil and gas facilities, our company has won orders to design large-scale maritime and floating wind power platforms,” he said. “Given this, it’s easy to see how Korea, with its extensive experience in the shipbuilding and maritime industries, also possesses a great deal of competitiveness in the burgeoning floating wind power industry.” 

Floating Wind Power Korea 2018 represented the first-ever forum on floating wind power focusing on floating platforms. 

In line with the Korean government’s 3020 policy, wherein the government has proposed that 20 percent of the nation’s electricity comes from renewable sources by the year 2030, Busan Techno Park and Hexicon AB signed a memorandum of understanding outlining ways in which the two entities can cooperate in the development of floating wind platform technology and the waters around Busan.
